"SAN LUIS OFFICER RECEIVES LIFESAVING RECOGNITION"
San Luis, Arizona - A San Luis police officer was given a Distinguished Service Award from Mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla and Commendations from San Luis Police Captain Javier Nuño for saving an infant’s life at Wednesday night's City Council meeting on February 10.
Officer Emmanuel Botello was the recipient of a Distinguished Service Award for saving an infant’s life. On January 28, 2010, at about 7:00 am, Officer Botello received an emergency 911 call. All he knew there was a problem with a one-year-old infant that was unconscious and not breathing. He immediately responded to the call and rushed to the scene. When he arrived, it became apparent that the infant was in danger.
“I took her in my arms, and the infant was out cold,” he recalled. Botello said he began performing CPR, but the infant indicated no breathing activity. He continued to give sternum rubs and rescue breaths. Soon, the child began to take shallow breaths. Within seconds, the infant showed vital signs and breathing activity. Botello stayed with the infant and mother until he could hand the infant to rescue personnel from the San Luis Fire Department.
According to Captain Javier Nuño, Officer Botello assisted the one-year-old infant without hesitation. “His actions were selfless and heroic. He saved this baby's life, valiantly ensuring the public's well-being and safety” Nuno said.
