"SAN LUIS CELEBRATES READ ACROSS AMERICA"
San Luis, Arizona – Arizona Desert Elementary School welcomed several visitors, with colorful children’s books in hand, to celebrate Reading Across America, and the Seventh Annual celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
The week-long literacy celebration takes place each year on March 2, the birthday of the much-loved Dr. Seuss, who had a big impact on reading.
This morning, San Luis residents, school parents, including Mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla and several San Luis police officers and fire personnel took part in today’s Read Across America program by meeting with children.
Mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla explained, “Reading develops our youth’s literacy skills and is essential to their academic success. Taking the time to read with our children and encouraging them to do so on their own, provides them with fun and valuable experiences that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.”
Laura Couret de Madrid, Principal of Arizona Desert Elementary, said the school sent invitations to anyone who wished to read to a classroom, including the main office and local officials.
“The students love hearing the stories read to them, it’s nice seeing people in the community join us here,” Couret de Madrid said.
